Each year, the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation awards up to fifteen scholarships to Canadian and international doctoral candidates pursuing research related to one of its four founding themes, one of which is “People and their Natural Environment.” This theme includes studies of a social, economic or political nature that lead to the identification, evaluation, or dissemination of sustainable environmental practices. It also includes an interest in environmental security at the global level, and in the link between healthy ecosystems, communities, and individuals. Candidates must be nominated by the Canadian or international institution where they wish to study or are currently studying. Universities can nominate a candidate from their institution who is pursuing doctoral studies at another university. The deadline for submissions by the universities is 09 December 2016. Link

The French-language universities of Belgium award 150 scholarships and about 70 training grants each year in the ARES program to applicants from developing countries. Subjects include environmental management and several others. Eligibility requirements are defined by age, previous education, and nationality. The eligible countries are Benin, Bolivia, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cambodia, Cameroon, Cuba, Dem Rep Congo, Ecuador, Ethiopia (only for courses in English), Haiti, Indonesia, Madagascar, Mali, Morocco, Niger, Peru, Philippines, Rwanda, Senegal, and Vietnam. The World Bank is interested in how “big data” can be used to address development questions, including how climate change affects food security and forestry and watersheds. Solutions may include but are not limited to analytical methodologies, APIs, algorithms, software applications, tools, and new data set generation. Technologies may include artificial intelligence, crowd-sourcing applications, data science, dynamic visualizations, machine learning, and predictive analytics. The Challenge will award US$10 thousand to the winner in each of the following two categories: (i) food security or nutrition, and (ii) forestry or watersheds. Submissions are invited from individuals, students, entrepreneurs, start-ups, university labs, private companies, nonprofits, and public sector agencies legally established in member countries of the World Bank Group. Blue Earth sponsors photography projects that educate the public about threatened cultures, endangered environments, and other social concerns. Blue Earth provides assistance with fund raising, publishing, and publicity. However, it does not make direct grants to sponsored projects. WHO invites proposals to undertake trans-disciplinary research on health and environment that could lead to community strategies for preventing and controlling vector-borne diseases transmitted by mosquitos, flies, snails, etc. Proposals are invited from eligible countries in WHO’s South East Asia and Western Pacific regions. The aim is to explore ecosystem-based tools and approaches to address the challenge of vector-borne diseases, especially in areas with inadequate health infrastructure and changing environmental conditions (climate change). The program will fund two projects for two years, with a maximum annual budget of $120 thousand per project. The deadline for proposals is 15 October 2016. Link

OpenIDEO convenes a global community to collaboratively create solutions addressing the world’s biggest challenges. Among these challenges is the Youth Empowerment Challenge for East Africa, which aims to empower young people in East Africa to participate in the economy. OpenIDEO invites new ideas that motivate and inspire youth; build skills; support their transition into financial stability; include the private sector; or harness the potential for the participation of young people in agriculture. The Challenge is looking for ideas that answer its challenge question and that are targeted at youth between ages 18-35 in Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda. At least five winners of this challenge will receive a grant of between US$50 thousand and US$150 thousand, plus training and design support from IDEO. The challenge is open to all creative thinkers worldwide, and in any discipline. The deadline for submissions in the ideas phase is 31 October 2016. Link
The Global Change Leaders Program is a seven-week education program to enable women from developing countries to strengthen their leadership capacities at the Coady Institute, affiliated with St Francis Xavier University in Canada. The program offers successful candidates a full scholarship that includes tuition, travel, accommodations, and meals. Applicants should have at least four years of demonstrated leadership experience in fields such as food security, environment, inclusive economic development, and others. The government of France makes grants through a regional fund (Le Fonds Pacifique) for economic, social, and cultural collaboration in the Pacific region. Funding priorities include actions to address climate change and the prevention of natural disasters; food security; sanitation; and other thematic areas. Grants are up to €30 thousand per project, and up to a maximum of 50% of project costs. The Fund aims to make about 40 grants for 2017. Applications are submitted through France’s diplomatic missions in the Pacific region. The application deadline is 25 November 2016. Link
The Global Social Venture Competition (GSVC) is a partnership of business schools in the Americas, Europe, Asia, and Africa to provide aspiring entrepreneurs with mentoring, exposure, and funding to support their social ventures. Past winners include plans for water supply, energy micro-credit, agricultural processing, ecological building materials, and other environmental themes. The GSVC will award cash prizes up to US$25 thousand. The deadline for the first entry round in most regions is 05 December 2016. Link
Principle 10 of the Rio Declaration on Environment and Development seeks to ensure that every person has access to information, can participate in the decision-making process, and has access to justice in environmental matters. The Small Sub-Grants Fund offers up to US$2 thousand to registered nonprofit NGOs in Latin America and the Caribbean for actions that address environmental injustice and related violations of human rights.
