The Global Challenges Research Fund is a new 5-year program of UK research to address problems faced by developing countries, with emphasis on health and agriculture. A consortium of BBSRC and other UK research organizations will support multidisciplinary awards for research on Global Agriculture and Food Systems in low and middle-income countries. The awards will focus on early-stage work, with grants up to £600 thousand for projects of 18-36 months. Applications are welcomed from UK research organisations eligible to receive funding from BBSRC. Partners from the developing countries can be included in proposals. Institute of International Education — Carnegie African Diaspora Fellowship Program
The Carnegie African Diaspora Fellowship Program (CADFP) is a fellowship program for African-born academics currently living in the USA and Canada, and working in higher education. Fellows engage in educational projects for periods ranging from two weeks to three months at universities and colleges in Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, and Uganda. There are no restrictions by disciplinary areas. Past fellows include examples in veterinary medicine, biology, forestry, and other areas of the natural sciences. Belgian Development Agency (BTC) — Fair and Sustainable Trade in Precious Metals
BTC’s program in Trade for Development offers grants to improve the market access of organizations that are committed to fair and sustainable trade, including trade in precious metals. Among other objectives, project activities include the reduction of negative environmental impacts of mining and metals extraction. Grants ranging from €50 thousand to €100 thousand are available to private nonprofit and private for-profit organizations (if composed of 50% or more cooperative producers) in the following countries: Algeria, Benin, Bolivia, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Dem Rep Congo, Ecuador, Guinea, Mali, Morocco, Mozambique, Niger, Palestinian Territories, Peru, Rwanda,Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, and Vietnam. U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) — Clean Water in Armenia
USAID-Yerevan will fund the project Participatory Utilization and Resource Efficiency of Water (PURE-Water) to improve the quality and use efficiency of water resources in the Ararat Valley. Activities will focus on the participation of Armenian civil society in policy development and small-scale pilot projects for integrated water management. European Commission (EC) — Production of Quality Coffee in Nepal
The EC will fund technical assistance to help coffee growers and cooperatives in Nepal improve the value chain for Nepalese coffee. Activities should aim to raise the productivity of coffee plantations; introduce organic methods in coffee growing; strengthen farmers’ cooperatives and associations; and develop improved branding and marketing systems for coffee. Grants will be approximately €500 thousand. MASHAV — Policies and Economics for Green Development
Israel’s Agency for International Development (MASHAV) supports professional short courses in Israel in subject areas that include agriculture, energy, health, education, and social development. In collaboration with the Weitz Center for Sustainable Development, MASHAV announces a course on policies and economic measures for local and regional green growth, scheduled for October-November 2016. A limited number of scholarships are available to cover course fees, accommodation, medical insurance, and other expenses in Israel. Applications are submitted through Israel’s diplomatic missions. African Union — Research Grants in Food and Agriculture
In collaboration with the European Union, Phase 2 of the African Union’s research grants will focus on research for food, nutritional security, and sustainable agriculture in Africa. Applications are invited from national and regional organizations, research institutions, universities, government ministries, and public institutions in Africa and EU member states. Eligibility for funding also extends to science and technology networks if all network members are registered in the eligible countries. Partnership for Economic Policy (PEP) — Testing to Evaluate Development Programs and Policies
PEP is a global partnership of development researchers, practitioners, institutes, and international organizations to promote research on policies to combat poverty. PEP will make grants for randomized control trials to test new programs or policy interventions in several thematic areas, including one on productivity in rural sectors. Each of four teams will benefit from a PEP support grant which includes mentoring, financial support up to US$100 thousand, and various other benefits. French Institute for Development Research (IRD) — Mobility Grants for Doctoral Research
The program ARTS funds doctoral research by individuals in the developing world who are working on research of interest to IRD and its partner organizations. The program encourages mobility of the supported researchers to engage with research partners in France, in another northern country, or in another southern country. Applicants must be under age 45. The U.S. State Department plans to award up to US$145 thousand for 18 months to design and test mobile training centers to reduce mercury use in small-scale gold processing in Bolivia and Peru.
