Sultan bin Abdualaziz Al Saud was a prominent figure in Saudi Arabia and its royal family. He served as the country’s Crown Prince from 2005 through his death in 2011.

The Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz International Prize for Water (PSIPW) is among many philanthropic initiatives set up and funded by Prince Sultan. The PSIPW aims to recognize and reward research advances in water-related fields on a worldwide basis.

Grant Programs for Agriculture, Energy, Environment, Natural Resources

Prizes for water research. The PSIPW awards cash prizes for outstanding research that leads to knowledge for water conservation and management. Past awards include several that focus on water quality and management in the developing world.

Creativity Prize –The Creativity Prize is awarded for water-related science that can be considered a breakthrough in any water-related field.

Specialized Prizes –The PSIPW offers four prizes in special topics of water research:

  • Surface Water;
  • Ground Water:
  • Alternative Water (e.g., desalinization, waste water treatment, etc.); and
  • Water Management and Protection.

Eligibility for the prizes is open to individuals, groups of individuals (i.e., research teams), and organizations anywhere in the world.

The prizes are awarded on the basis of published research papers, published books, and registered patents within the previous five years.

The PSIPW awards prizes in four categories. Each of the four specialized prizes is worth US$133 thousand.

About the prizes

APPLICATION: The PSIPW operates on bi-annual cycles, inviting nominations according to a calendar schedule.

Candidates for the Creativity Prize are chosen from nominations submitted by third parties (i.e., universities, research institutes, companies, water organizations, and others). Candidates for the specialized prizes can nominate themselves.

Nominations are submitted online in English.
