System for Analysis, Research, and Training

Support for research and capacity building on climate change

Principal Office: International

The SysTem for Analysis, Research and Training (START) is an international network of scientists and institutions which conduct research on regional aspects of climate change.

Most of START’s financial contributors are publicly funded organizations for science and research, aid agencies for international development, and private foundations.

Thematic interests in START are as follows:

  • Climate variability and change;
  • Changes in atmospheric composition and its impacts;
  • Impacts of land-use change on climate;
  • Climate change and coastal zones;
  • Vulnerability and adaptation to climate change;
  • Regional cooperation in research on climate change; and
  • Dialogue between researchers and policy makers on climate change.

Grant Programs for Agriculture, Energy, Environment, Natural Resources

Research and Education in Relation to Climate Change. START’s programs support capacity building; regional research; and vulnerability and adaptation (climate change).

Each program is comprised of individual projects that often provide combinations of grants, fellowships, exchange opportunities, and other assistance to young scientists — particularly in developing countries.

Most opportunities are for young scientists in Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, East Asia, and the Asia-Pacific region.
