Energy and Environment Partnership

Grants for renewable energy in the Andean region, Southern and East Africa, and the Mekong region

Principal Office: Finland

The Energy and Environment Partnership (EEP) is an initiative of the Government of Finland, in collaboration with partner organizations, to help finance renewable energy in the developing world.

The EEP aims to increase access to all sources of renewable energy including solar, hydro, wind, biofuel, biomass, and geothermal energy — and to improve energy efficiency. The partnership takes a regional approach to support programs in the Andean region, Southern and East Africa, and the Mekong Region.

Grant Programs for Agriculture, Energy, Environment, Natural Resources

Project funding for renewable energy. With the aim of stimulating serious investment in renewable energy, the EEP makes seed grants for feasibility studies, pilot and demonstration projects, energy policy analysis, information programs, and capacity building.

Eligibility for grants extends to private companies, universities and research institutions, nonprofit organizations, NGOs, and other types of institutions from both the public and private sectors. Grant size is specified in each call for proposals.

APPLICATION: The program announces calls for proposals when funding is available. The usual format of each call includes an application form; proposal guidelines; eligibility requirements; an application deadline; and contact information for individuals who may have questions.

Applicants generally need to provide counterpart funding and/or in-kind support for proposed projects.

Each program in EEP varies in the composition of its international and national organizations, and in its governance structure. However, all partnerships include Finland’s Ministry for Foreign Affairs.

EEP’s websites post reports that summarize the results of each funding call. These reports can be helpful to understand the types of proposals that win support.

Until recently, the EEP had included a regional program for Central America (concluded in 2014), the Andean region (concluded in 2016), and the Mekong region (concluded in 2018).
