The World Water Council (WWC) is an international multi-stakeholder platform. The Council aims to facilitate the conservation, protection, development, planning, management, and use of water on an environmentally sustainable basis at a global scale.

The WWC takes an interest in international coordination of policies, themes, and activities in freshwater conservation and management at a global level.

The Council awards prizes to honor accomplishments in the water sector. The prizes are announced at the World Water Forum, convened every three years.

Grant Programs for Agriculture, Energy, Environment, and Natural Resources

Prizes for Accomplishments in the Water Sector. Prizes in the 6th World Water Forum (Marseille 2012) are identified below.
  • King Hassan II Great World Water Prize. One prize of US$100 thousand for outstanding lifetime achievements by institutions, organizations, individuals, or groups of individuals in any aspects of water resources.
  • Kyoto World Water Grand Prize. One prize of ¥3 million for grassroots initiatives that improve the water-related situation of local communities.
  • Compromiso Mexico Water Prize. One prize of US$15 thousand, one of US$10 thousand, and one of US$5 thousand for local public policies that have a positive impact on drinking water, sewerage, and sanitation services in the communities they serve.
  • Turkish Republic Prime Minister's Water Prize. One prize of 50 thousand Turkish liras (approximately US$25 thousand) for individuals or organizations contributing scientific studies, technological innovations, awareness building, or regional cooperation on water.
  • Prize for Water and Adaptation Actions. One prize of US$50 thousand offered by a consortium of organizations in Latin America for actions in water management (by municipalities and civil society organizations) that support adaptation to climate change in Latin America.

APPLICATION: The WWC launches calls for prize nominations on its website prior to each World Water Forum. These forums are scheduled every three years (2009, 2012, 2015, etc.).

WWC’s website is available in English, French, and Russian.

WWC is financed primarily through membership fees. Members are international organizations, government organizations, professional associations in the water sector, private companies in the water sector, and others. Additional support is provided by the host city of Marseille, France. Specific projects and programs are financed through donations and grants.

The World Water Forum is the world’s largest international event on freshwater. The 5th Forum in Istanbul (2009) drew 25 thousand people, according to informal estimates.
