Waitt Foundation

Focus of This Profile: Grants for marine protected areas and fisheries management.

Principal Office: USA

The interests of the Waitt Foundation have evolved through several stages of grant making since the Foundation’s establishment in 1993.

The Foundation began with a focus on community building and violence prevention, and this area continues to be supported. The Foundation more recently added grant making for ocean conservation, as well as support for a wider arena of physical exploration and discovery.

Grant Programs for Agriculture, Energy, Environment, and Natural Resources

1 -- Ocean Conservation Grants (major grants). The Foundation makes grants to strengthen and expand marine protected areas, and to promote sustainable fisheries. Grants support scientific research, policy, management, and communications (i.e., public awareness).

Eligibility for grants extends to nonprofit charitable organizations in the USA, and to organizations external to the USA which apply through a U.S. fiscal sponsor.

The minimum grant size is US$100 thousand; there is no maximum. The program will consider multi-year proposals.

2 -- Rapid Ocean Conservation Grants (small grants). The ROC Grants Program offers small grants with a quick turnaround time for solutions to emerging issues in marine conservation.

The purpose of the grants, eligibility criteria, and types of actions are similar to the major grants. However, the small grants consider funding urgency in addition to the other criteria. The Foundation reviews ROC requests on a bi-monthly basis.

Grants in ROC are typically US$1 thousand to US$10 thousand, and not above US$20 thousand. The grant from the Waitt Foundation should be the sole or primary source of project funding.
