The interests of the Wait Foundation have evolved through several stages of grant making since the Foundation’s establishment in 1993.

The Foundation began with a focus on community building and violence prevention, and this area continues to be supported. The Foundation more recently added grant making for ocean conservation, as well as support for a wider arena of exploration and discovery.

Grant Programs for Agriculture, Energy, Environment, and Natural Resources

1 --Ocean Conservation. The Foundation makes grants for marine protected areas; improved fisheries management; global awareness about declining ocean life; scientific research on ocean ecosystems; and underwater sea exploration. -- Link

2 -- Exploration and Discovery. Grants fund archaeology expeditions, ocean explorations, and other exploratory missions that aim for cutting-edge discovery. -- Link

The Foundation makes grants to nonprofit charitable organizations in the USA, and to organizations external to the USA which apply through a fiscal sponsor.

The minimum grant size is US$100 thousand; there is no maximum.

Grant seekers submit a preliminary grant request online. The Foundation does not accept submissions in any other form. Preliminary grant requests are accepted all year.

The Foundation reviews the preliminary requests in order to determine which applicants to invite for full proposals. On occasion, additional information may be requested prior to a final decision. -- Link

Since its inception in 1993, the Waitt Foundation has made more than 2,000 grants for over US$100 million (all programs).

In collaboration with the National Geographic Society (USA), Waitt makes grants to young researchers in several fields of the natural sciences, as well as in archaeology and cultural anthropology.
