The Total Foundation is the corporation’s philanthropic organization. Projects are carried out in partnership with independent organizations in France and internationally.

The Foundation has the following three program areas: Community Support; Cultural Heritage; and Environment.

Grant Programs for Agriculture, Energy, Environment, and Natural Resources

Environment. The Foundation’s grants in Environment emphasize protection of marine biodiversity through research, education and training, and awareness raising. This reflects that many of the company’s activities occur in offshore environments. Specific themes for grants include:
  • Behavior of marine species;
  • Processes and dynamics of marine life;
  • Marine and coastal ecosystems; and
  • Information and awareness about marine conservation.

Grant recipients are a wide range of international organizations, government agencies, conservation NGOs, and research institutes and universities in France and internationally.

The Foundation’s website is available in French and English.

The Total Foundation has a budget of €50 million for the period 2008-2012. The corporation’s philanthropy outside the Foundation (e.g., employee and corporate contributions) provides another €5 million to €7 million per year.

In year 2010, the Foundation’s expenditure for projects in marine biodiversity was €3 million for 70 projects.

Before year 2007, the Total Foundation focused exclusively on marine biodiversity and conservation.

The Foundation publishes an annual activities report, with extensive details on funding programs and projects.
