The Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) has businesses in Canadian banking, international banking, wealth management, capital markets, and insurance. RBC operates through offices in Canada and over 50 other countries.

The RBC Blue Water Project is an important dimension of RBC’s commitment to environmental sustainability, and its largest charitable initiative to date. The first phase of the RBC Blue Water Project is a grant program of CA$50 million over ten years (from 2007) to foster water stewardship in Canada and internationally.

The Blue Water Project promotes watershed protection and access to clean drinking water.

Grant Programs for Agriculture, Energy, Environment, and Natural Resources

Grants for watersheds and clean drinking water. The RBC Blue Water Project makes grants in support of the following activities:
  • Watershed awareness;
  • Community-based watershed stewardship;
  • Protection and restoration of sensitive natural areas;
  • Sustainable water use and conservation; and
  • Access to clean drinking water.
In 2013-2014, the Blue Water Project focuses on protecting and preserving water in towns, cities, and urbanized areas.

Leadership Grants: Leadership Grants are open to organizations that are recognized as leaders in water programs in Canada, the USA, and other countries where RBC does business. RBC makes grants from CAN$10 thousand to CAN$100 thousand to nonprofit charitable organizations, which may work in partnership with other organizations.

Community Action Grants: These focus on watershed protection by local and community organizations in Canada, the USA, and the Caribbean. Grants range from CAN$1 thousand to CAN$10 thousand.

Applications describe the applying organization; the program or project for which funding is requested; and the organization’s budget and financial situation.

In both categories, the Blue Water Project posts annual application deadlines.

RBC accepts applications for projects that operate in countries where the bank does business, including the developing countries identified below.

Southeast Asia and Pacific Islands: Brunei

East Asia: China

South Asia: India

Middle East and North Africa: United Arab Emirates

Latin America and Caribbean: Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, Bahamas, Barbados, Brazil, Dominica, Mexico, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Uruguay, Venezuela

Note: RBC is present in several Caribbean territories not recognized as countries in the Terra Viva Grants Directory: Cayman Islands, Montserrat, and Turks and Caicos Islands.

Project Locator is a searchable map and database of Blue Water projects. To date, the large majority of projects are located in Canada and the USA.

RBC is among Canada’s largest corporate donors. In addition to the Blue Water Project, RBC supports charitable activities in education, sports, mental health, and other areas.
