Respect for cultural diversity and ecological integrity are characteristic of the Fund’s activities. Grant making in RBF is organized around themes and pivotal places:
Grant Programs for Agriculture, Energy, Environment, and Natural Resources 1 -- Sustainable Development. This program (revised in 2011) emphasizes policy and action that respond to climate change. It aims to promote an understanding of climate change and support for actions to address the threat; support implementation to build clean energy economies (in the USA); support reduced reliance on carbon-intensive energy sources; and support targeted efforts to advance international progress on climate change. -- Link 2 -- Southern China. Grant making promotes the links between environment and human health; sustainable approaches to meet the region's energy needs; and community leadership in support of sustainable development. -- Link 3 -- Western Balkans. The program focuses on inclusive collaboration to promote the wise use of natural and cultural resources -- and to engage the public in processes of sustainable development -- with a particular focus on Serbia, Kosovo, and Montenegro. -- Link Grant recipients are nonprofit educational and charitable organizations in the USA and other countries, primarily in China and the Western Balkans. Most grants range from US$2 thousand to US$300 thousand for up to three years. The average grant size in 2010 was US$83 thousand. APPLICATION (for 1-2-3 above): Grant seekers should study the overview of RBF’s grant-making process. -- Link They should also review the guidelines of the program to which they intend to apply. Applicants start with an eligibility quiz, one for applicants from the USA and another for applicants from other countries. Applicants then complete an online grant inquiry form (i.e., electronic letter of inquiry). The form asks for detailed information regarding the specific grant request. RBF also accepts inquiries by mail and fax, although the Fund’s response time is longer than for inquires submitted online. After its review of the grant inquiry, RBF may invite selected applicants to submit full proposals.
