Additional program areas fund science research, and initiatives to improve the quality of life in the San Francisco Bay Area, USA.

Grant Programs for Agriculture, Energy, Environment, and Natural Resources

Environmental Conservation. The Foundation’s grant making in Environmental Conservation funds conservation in North America and South America.
  • Andes-Amazon Initiative -- The objective is multi-country conservation of Amazonian forests for biodiversity and regulation of the regional carbon cycle. Projects focus on resource inventories and mapping, protected areas, biodiversity corridors, conservation finance, forest management strategies, and support for local livelihoods.
  • Marine Conservation Initiative -- Funding is principally for activities on the west and east coasts of North America, but with indirect benefits for all countries of the Pacific and Atlantic Basins. Grants support marine spatial planning, and reformed fisheries management.
  • Wild Salmon Ecosystems Initiative -- The geographical scope is the North Pacific region of the USA, Canada, and Russia. Strategies aim to protect salmon watersheds, improve aquaculture practices, and ensure that salmon fisheries are sustainably managed.
  • Support to Conservation International -- The Moore Foundation supports the work of Conservation International, especially in its programs related to conservation science.
  • Stand-Alone Grants -- In addition to long-term funding for the initiatives above, Moore makes a limited number of grants for time-sensitive and innovative special projects . These are for conservation land use; environmental science; and changes in economic, social, and political contexts for conservation.
About the program in Environmental Conservation.

Most of Moore’s grants in Environmental Conservation are to nonprofit organizations in the USA and internationally (i.e., Canada for marine conservation and salmon ecosystems, and Amazon countries for the Andes-Amazon Initiative). Grant recipients include conservation NGOs, policy institutes, development organizations, and others.

Grants generally range from US$100 thousand to multi-million dollars.

APPLICATION:   The Foundation researches and evaluates organizations to fill specific niches within Moore’s program areas. The Foundation does not accept unsolicited proposals.

Geographical Distribution of Grant Activities in Developing Countries

Eastern Europe and Russia: Russia (wild salmon ecosystems)

Latin America and Caribbean: Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, Suriname, Venezuela (Andes-Amazon Initiative)

Note: French Guiana is included in the Andes-Amazon Initiative, but is not recognized as a developing country in the definition of the Terra Viva Grants Directory.

Comments

In 2010, the Foundation authorized grant funding (all programs) of US$265 million.

The Foundation’s database can be searched for past grants awarded by funding area and year.

Moore’s program area in Science is relevant for researchers in marine microbiology. The Marine Microbiology Initiative has the ten-year objective of developing predictive ecosystem models of representative marine environments.

In recent years, Moore provides substantial grant funding for Reduced Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD). Many of these are stand-alone grants in Environmental Conservation.

Moore offers news releases, and it posts annual reports.
