First Peoples Worldwide focuses on indigenous development issues. It aims to stop and reverse injustices by equipping indigenous peoples with resources to challenge government, business, and conservation policies if they are not consistent with indigenous interests.

Additionally, First Peoples builds capacity in indigenous communities to play an active role in conservation and environmental stewardship. Interests include:
  • Biodiversity conservation and sustainable land use on indigenous homelands;
  • Protected rights of hunting and gathering on indigenous lands;
  • Mapping indigenous homelands;
  • Human rights in conservation (avoiding evictions, forced relocations, and torture in the name of conservation);
  • Co-management of land and resources with others;
  • Equitable funding for conservation on indigenous territories; and
  • Indigenous responses to climate change, and
  • Indigenous participation in dialogues about climate change.
First Peoples supports these objectives through several means, including grant making in “Keepers of the Earth Program and Fund.”

Grant Programs for Agriculture, Energy, Environment, and Natural Resources

Keepers of the Earth Fund. The Keepers of the Earth Fund makes grants for environmental activities consistent with the social, political, and economic welfare of indigenous communities. This refers to land use and conservation; traditional decision-making; climate change; food security; and other issues important to indigenous communities.

Grants are made to and on behalf of indigenous-led organizations and groups outside the USA, mainly in developing countries. The recipient organizations must have a bank account, or have fiscal sponsors.

Grants range from US$250 to US$20 thousand. On average, a first-time award is US$5 thousand or less for projects of up to one year.

APPLICATION:  First Peoples provides eligibility criteria, application guidelines, and application forms in English, French, and Spanish.

The Fund awards grants on an annual cycle, and it posts the calendar deadline. If community projects cannot complete a written application, First Peoples will accept grant applications in video format. It offers guidance on how to submit a video application.
