Overview Principal Office: UK Key Words: ecology, research, education Website: Link The British Ecological Society (BES) was established in 1913 to promote and foster the study of ecology. The Society currently has around 4,000 members around the world. Its core activities are publication of research results in ecology, support of scientific meetings, and promotion of ecological awareness through education at all levels. BES offers many grants and awards each year with the aim of promoting research and training in ecology. Grant Programs for Agriculture, Energy, Environment, and Natural Resources Several grant-making schemes directly or indirectly fund international work. The most direct funding for international projects is through the following categories of grants. 1 --Overseas Bursaries and Overseas Fellowships. This scheme supports ecological research of African nationals. Individuals with successful bursaries can subsequently apply for fellowships. Overseas bursaries are up to £7 thousand for 18 months, and overseas fellowships are up to £15 thousand for 36 months. – Link Bursaries Link Fellowships 2 -- Early Career Project Grants. This program assists promising ecologists early in their careers to carry out innovative or important research of a pure or applied nature. BES looks favorably on applications from individuals outside of the UK who do not have a rich resource base in their own scientific communities. Grants are up to £20 thousand. – Link 3 -- Small Ecological Projects. The grants promote all aspects of ecological research and ecological survey. Grants can be used to enable ecologists to travel from the United Kingdom or Eire to a third country, or vice versa, where alternative sources of funding are inadequate. There are no restrictions on where applicants come from, or where they carry out their research work. Grants are up to £1,000 for travel costs and up to £1,500 for other expenses. – Link 4 -- Developing Country Travel Grants. These grants fund ecologists from developing countries to attend the BES Annual Meeting or Symposium, and to have their costs covered while hosted at a center of learning in the UK. Grants are up to £2 thousand. – Link APPLICATION (for 1-2-3-4 above): For each of these grant schemes, the Society provides complete application information. Each scheme needs to be consulted separately. Application information includes guidelines, eligibility requirements, forms to be submitted, calendar dates for submission, and the Society’s criteria for evaluating proposals. Some grants are open only to BES members, and/or to applicants from low and middle-income countries. The website provides details on how to apply for BES membership. – Link Geographical Distribution of Grant Activities in Developing Countries Worldwide Comments The BES makes grants valued at over £400 thousand per year (all programs). Because the BES offers an exceptionally large number of categories of grants and awards, grant seekers are advised to carefully review the offerings and requirements listed under “Grants and Awards” on the Society’s website. -- Link The BES website includes a number of resources that may interest grant seekers in environment and ecology, including its journals and other publications.
