The Body Shop is an international cosmetics company pioneered by Dame Anita Roddick with the idea that "businesses have the power to do good."

The Body Shop Foundation promotes ethical trading and issues of social, animal, environmental, and human rights. It seeks to work with innovative groups and activists who have new ideas in these themes. The Foundation is funded by an annual donation from the company, and through various fundraising initiatives.

The Foundation’s three program areas are Animal Protection; Environmental Protection; and Human Rights. The themes of greatest relevance for the Terra Viva Grants Directory are:
  • Minimizing the consumption of energy and resources;
  • Developing renewable energy;
  • Protecting endangered species; and
  • Halting the exploitation of animals in the cosmetics industry, and the cruel harvesting of animals for by-products.

Grant Programs for Agriculture, Energy, Environment, and Natural Resources

1 -- Global Grants. The Foundation’s grants team invites applications for projects not covered at regional levels (see below), and that include long-term partnerships. Each year, the grants team chooses a remit, and then invites applications that fall within it. Grants are up to £20 thousand per year for projects of 2-3 years. Small grants are up to £5 thousand.

2 -- Regional Funding Program. The Foundation makes grants at the regional level (“zone funding”) in the following regions: (i) Asia-Pacific; (ii) Europe, Middle East, and Africa; (iii) the Americas; and (iv) UK and Republic of Ireland. In each region, the company establishes panels of employees and franchises to define criteria and processes for grant making. Most regional grants range from £1 thousand to £10 thousand.

3 -- Local Community Grants (UK). The Foundation supports charities and projects that operate in the areas surrounding the Body Shop’s head offices in Littlehampton and London, UK. Projects are chosen through nominations by the company’s staff.

APPLICATION (for 1-2-3 above):  The Body Shop Foundation relies on its own employees and consultants to research grant-making opportunities.

Even though the Foundation emphasizes that nominations for projects are handled internally, it invites potentially interested grant seekers to contact the Foundation by telephone or email if their project fits the Foundation’s interests (see “FAQ”). - - Link
