Academy of Sciences in the Developing World -- TWAS Celso Furtado Prize in Social Sciences. This is a new annual prize in TWAS to recognize the work of social scientists who have been living and working in developing countries for at least ten years. The amount of the prize is US$15 thousand, provided by the government of Brazil. The application deadline is 29 February 2012.
LinkAustralian Government -- Australia Leadership Awards 2012. The Australian government makes a significant contribution to the education of talented individuals in the developing countries through its Leadership Awards. The subject areas for study correspond to priorities of Australia's aid programs by regions and countries -- and include agriculture, energy, natural resources, and environment. The deadlines for Development Scholarships and Leadership Award Scholarships are in February, March, April, and May -- varying by country.
LinkEuropean Commission (EC) -- Food Security in Afghanistan. The EC calls for proposals to improve food security for the most vulnerable populations in Afghanistan. The emphasis is on actions that connect relief, rehabilitation, and development. Actions can include crop intensification; livestock support and herd management; irrigation schemes; and others. The program is open to nonprofit organizations (including in the public sector) in the EU member countries, Afghanistan, and other countries covered by the EU's Development Cooperation Instrument -- and to inter-governmental organizations. Grants will range from €750 thousand to €2 million, subject to co-financing requirements. Reference EuropeAid/132314/M/ACT/AF. The closing date for concept notes is 20 February 2012.
LinkFrench Development Agency (L'AFD) -- NGO Projects 2012. Through its program FISONG, the AFD will make grants for field projects in two themes in 2012: (i) Biodiversity and Development; and (ii) Water and Sanitation. The program favors projects in countries which are priority for French assistance in Sub-Saharan Africa. Both themes emphasize benefits for local populations. The program is open to French, international, and local NGOs -- preferably in partnerships -- for projects that average three years. The application deadline is 29 February 2012.
LinkFuture Agricultures Consortium -- Research on African Agricultural Policy 2012. The Future Agricultures Consortium (FAC) is a partnership of research organizations in the UK and Sub-Saharan Africa to support research on African agricultural policy. The FAC offers fellowships to early-career researchers in the UK and Africa for periods ranging from six months to one year. Research priorities for 2012 include special topics defined by FAC, but it will accept applications that address any of its eight thematic areas. The successful grantees will be assigned to work in partnership with individuals at FAC's institutions. The application deadline is 17 February 2012.
LinkInstitute of Development Studies -- Climate Research and Information Services in South Asia. Climate change researchers in South Asia are invited to apply for a new program, SICRISA ("Support to Improve Climate Research and Information Services in South Asia"). With funding from the UK's DFID, SICRISA offers fellowships and writing workshops for researchers from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Nepal, and Pakistan who are working on any aspect of research related to climate change. SICRISA anticipates selecting 20 individuals for fellowships, and 60 individuals for writing workshops. Priority is for early and mid-career researchers, although SICRISA may also consider more established researchers. The application deadline is 21 February 2012.
Link Landesa Rural Development Institute -- Women's Land Rights Visiting Professionals. Landesa's program for Visiting Professionals invites applications from motivated professionals to enhance their ability to improve women’s land rights in India, China, or East Africa (Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania). The criteria include at least five years of development experience, two of which are on land tenure or women’s rights. Landesa provides six weeks of orientation and leadership training in Seattle (USA), followed by mentoring in a mutually agreed project in the specified regions. The deadline for applications is 29 February 2012.
LinkSonoran Joint Venture -- Binational Bird Conservation, Mexico-USA. Sonoran Joint Venture announces its grants program for 2012. Priorities in 2012 are habitat protection, management, and restoration; data on bird distribution; and monitoring. Proposals should demonstrate binational cooperation (USA and Mexico) and a partnerships orientation. Grants are up to a maximum of US$10 thousand, with an average of U$5 thousand. The deadline for applications is 15 February 2012.
LinkSTART (SysTem for Analysis, Research and Training) -- Disaster Risk Reduction in South Asia. In collaboration with the Climate Development and Knowledge Network, START calls for research proposals on integrating disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation for resilient development in South Asia (Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka). Grants are a maximum US$110 thousand for up to 19 months. Each proposal must involve a team of at least three scientists across different disciplines; the principal investigator should be based in South Asia. Multi-national teams are encouraged. The deadline for proposals is 29 February 2012.
LinkUnited Nations Convention to Combat Desertification -- "Land for Life" Award 2012. The UNCCD presents the "Land for Life" Award for inspiring efforts in land conservation and management. Eligibility is open to individuals and institutions that are making a significant and innovative contribution to reduce land degradation through land management, political leadership, policy, business, advocacy campaigns, or scientific research. Application forms are available in several languages. Three awards will be granted from a total prize fund of up to US$100 thousand. The deadline for applications is 29 February 2012.
LinkU.S. Agency for International Development -- Agricultural Commercialization and Innovation. USAID will make a five-year grant of US$60 million or more to improve how agricultural technologies are disseminated through markets, and to promote innovative partnerships for smallholder agriculture. The program will focus on the countries of the Feed the Future Initiative. There are no restrictions on eligibility. Funding Opportunity RFA-OAA-12-000003. The closing date is 29 February 2012.
Link to the Call Link to Feed the Future World Conservation Union (IUCN) -- CARPE Small Grants 2012. IUCN's small grants through CARPE (Central African Regional Program for the Environment) aim to strengthen civil society for sustainable forest conservation in Central Africa. Eligible countries are Cameroon, Central African Republic, Congo, Dem Rep Congo, Equatorial Guinea, and Gabon. Grants are up to US$30 thousand for actions in climate change mitigation and adaption; policy and governance of natural resources; capacity building; and other support for conservation and sustainable livelihoods. Applications (in French or English) are due 15 February 2012.

African Economic Research Consortium -- Proposals in Climate Change and Green Development. The African Economic Research Consortium (AERC), in collaboration with the United Nations University's World Institute for Development Economics Research (UNU-WIDER), manage a collaborative program on issues of climate change. AERC and UNU-WIDER welcome proposals for research in the area of climate change and green development. Eligibility extends to researchers in the organizations and universities which comprise the AERC. The maximum grant is US$15 thousand. Proposals will be evaluated and funded on a rolling basis through 31 March 2012.
LinkAfrican Network of Scientific and Technological Institutions (ANTSI) -- L’Oréal-UNESCO Regional Fellowships for Women. ANSTI administers the L’Oréal-UNESCO Regional Fellowships "For Women in Science" in Sub-Sahara Africa. Fellowships will be awarded for PhD research by women up to age 40 in any country of Sub-Saharan Africa. All fields of science, engineering, and technology are eligible. The awards are up to US$20 thousand. Applications should be submitted by 30 March 2012.

American Museum of Natural History (Chicago) -- Lerner-Gray Grants for Marine Research 2012. The Lerner-Gray grants support research in marine biology. Most grants are US$500 to US$2 thousand. Research may be conducted at the museum, or in the field. The grants are open to applicants of all nationalities. The application deadline is 15 March 2012.

Thematic areas of cooperation include "Environment and Sustainable Development." Priority is for participation of universities from non-EU Member States ( Albania, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Serbia, and Ukraine). The application deadline is 26 March 2012.
LinkFrench Committee for International Solidarity -- Family Agriculture in West Africa. The French Committee for International Solidarity
(Comité Français pour la Solidarité Internationale - CFSI), in partnership with Fondation de France, funds projects that support small-scale farming in West Africa. Proposals are invited from organizations and partnerships in West Africa and Europe such as farming organizations; NGOs; public institutions; and networks of organizations and individuals working together. For one-year projects, grants range from €10 thousand to €15 thousand. For projects of up to three years, the maximum funding is €50 thousand per project. Applications can be submitted in French or English. The application deadline is 29 March 2012.
LinkFrench Ministry of Foreign Affairs -- Agricultural Research, France-Morocco. France's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, jointly with Morocco's Ministry of Agriculture and Maritime Fisheries, call for research projects in agriculture and veterinary medicine to advance rural development in Morocco. Themes in the program (PRAD 2013) include water use in agriculture; biodiversity protection related to agriculture; adaptation to climate change; plant and animal health; and others. The average grant is €7500 per year for three years. The deadline for submissions is 30 March 2012.
Link Global Agriculture and Food Security Program (GAFSP) -- Public Sector Window, 2nd Call for Proposals. The GAFSP aims to improve income and food security in the developing world by raising agricultural productivity, linking farmers to markets, reducing risk and vulnerability, and improving non-farm rural livelihoods. Eligibility in the current call for proposals is limited to the lowest-income countries (as defined by the World Bank). Proposals should be submitted by ministries of finance in the eligible countries. GAFSP anticipates allocating at least US$180 million to five or six proposals. The application deadline is 31 March 2012.
LinkGlobal Biodiversity Information Facility -- Young Researchers Award 2012. The GBIF invites proposals from graduate students for the 2012 Young Researchers Award. The prize aims to foster innovative research and discovery in biodiversity informatics. GBIF will make two awards of €4 thousand each. Nominations are submitted through GBIF's representatives in its voting and associate countries. The deadline for nominations is 15 March 2012.
Link Nando Peretti Foundation -- Environmental Conservation 2012. Among a broad range of interests, the Nando Peretti Foundation makes grants to nonprofit organizations for environmental conservation. Most past grants have supported projects in Italy and the developing countries. There is no pre-defined budget limit. Applications will be accepted 20 February 2012 through 10 March 2012.
LinkPoweo Enterprise Foundation -- Grants 2012. Poweo Foundation makes grants for projects in renewable energy in Africa. Grants are available to nonprofit organizations and foundations, local authorities, and institutions of higher education and research in France. Past grants have averaged about €10 to 20 thousand. The deadlines for application are 12 March and 14 September 2012.
LinkSchwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship -- Global Competition 2012. The Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship fosters social entrepreneurs as a catalyst for innovation and progress. Categories include agriculture, animals, biodiversity, energy, environment, waste management, and water (among others). The Social Entrepreneur of the Year Competitions take place in different world regions. Winners are invited to the regional meetings of the World Economic Forum, and are offered other networking opportunities. The Global Competition has a deadline of 15 March 2012.
Link Stone Family Foundation -- Stone Prize for Innovation in Water. The Stone Family Foundation has launched a prize for innovative and entrepreneurial initiatives to get clean drinking water to people who need it in Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and Southeast Asia. The Foundation is looking for ideas that are proven in practice, and that are ready to be expanded. The Foundation will award up to five prizes, each of £100 thousand. The competition is open to individuals, NGOs, social enterprises, and other nonprofit organizations -- and to for-profit organizations that can demonstrate their social impact and need for the prize. The application deadline (for Round 1) is 22 March 2012.
Link TRAID (Textile Recycling for Aid and International Development) -- Grants 2012. TRAID is committing £400 thousand raised from the collection, reuse, and resale of unwanted textiles for international projects. TRAID's grants support projects fighting inequality and exploitation in the global textile supply chain, and projects establishing environmental sustainability in some of the world's poorest communities.
(For an explanation of the environmental impact of textiles, see this Link.) There is no restriction on grant size, nor on geographical regions. The deadline for concept notes is 06 March 2012.
LinkUK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) -- UK-China Collaboration in Renewable Energy. The UK's EPSRC and the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) will support collaborative research in the field of "smart grids,' with themes that include integration of large-scale renewables. Proposals should include leading UK researchers wishing to develop contacts with leading researchers from NSFC institutes in China. The program aims to fund three or four proposals. The application deadline is 29 March 2012.
Link UK Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) -- Global Challenge Networks 2012. The STFC will provide funding for new multi-disciplinary research networks in energy, health care, and environment. Themes in energy include solar devices. Themes in environment include tropical forests, pollution, and others. Each network should be a new collaboration based in the UK, but open to collaboration with other countries. The amount of funding that can be applied for will be limited to £100 thousand per year for up to three years. The closing date is 29 March 2012.
Link United Nations University - Institute of Natural Resources in Africa -- Research Support 2012. UNU-INRA offers funding for research related to the development and management of natural resources in Africa. The Visiting Scholars Program is for researchers in Africa and worldwide who have their research data, but who need work stations and funding to be able to prepare publications. Applications are invited from PhDs in agricultural sciences, environmental sciences, economics, social sciences, international relations, law, and related disciplines. UNU particularly invites female Africans to apply. UNU will provide US$1,500 per month for researchers who spend at least three months with UNU-INRA in Accra. The deadline for applications is 15 March 2012.

African Union -- Research Grants 2012. With funding from the European Commission, the African Union Commission invites proposals for research in post-harvest and agriculture; renewable and sustainable energy; and water and sanitation in Africa. Eligibility extends to most European, African, and other developing (ACP) countries -- and OECD/DAC countries for actions in the least-developed African countries. The AU favors proposals from consortia of scientists in at least three ACP countries, including two or more countries in Africa. Grants range from €500 thousand to €750 thousand, subject to co-financing requirements. The deadline for applications (English or French) is 20 April 2012.

The closing date for applications is 30 April 2012.
LinkBritish Ecological Society -- Small Ecological Project Grants. The SEPG supports individuals to undertake small pilot projects in any aspect of ecological research or survey. There are no restrictions on nationality or residence, or where the research work is carried out. The grant covers up to £1,000 for travel costs, and up to £1,500 for other expenses. Applicants must be members of BES, except for applicants in low and middle-income countries. The closing dates for applications are 01 April and 01 November.
Link Center for Economic Policy Research (UK) -- Private Enterprise Development in Low-Income Countries. The UK's Center for Economic Policy Research, in partnership with the UK's Department for International Development, have launched a 5-year program in Private Enterprise Development for Low-Income Countries (PEDL). PEDL aims to understand market forces and constraints in the world's low-income countries, with attention to cross-cutting themes that include climate and environment (among others). Eligibility extends to researchers from academia, the non-profit sector, think tanks, research centers, and similar. Exploratory Grants (multiple deadlines per year) range from £10 thousand to £35 thousand; the next deadline is 31 March 2012. Major Research Grants (annual) are a minimum of £100 thousand; the deadline is 16 April 2012.
Link Cleveland Metroparks Zoo -- Scott Neotropical Fund 2012. The Scott Neotropical Fund makes grants for conservation of wildlife in the neotropics (Mexico, Caribbean, Central America, and South America). Grants support research, training, and technical assistance with the aim of benefiting local communities along with providing wildlife protection. The primary investigator must be resident in the neotropical region. Grants are US$3 thousand to US$5 thousand. The application deadline is 06 April 2012.
Link European Commission (EC) -- Kolarctic, 4th Call for Proposals. Kolarctic supports cross-border strategies between Russia, Finland, Sweden, and Norway in the Barents region of the Arctic. Projects may include issues related to environment and natural resources (e.g., fisheries, plant resources, etc.). Each proposal must have at least one actor from the EU (Sweden, Finland) and at least one from Russia. Eligibility requirements, and the rules on Lead Partners and partners, are explained in the call for proposals. The deadline for applications is 16 April 2012.
LinkU.S. Agency for International Development -- Innovations in Gender Equality to Promote Household Food Security. USAID will make grants to increase women’s leadership in the agriculture sector; improve women’s utilization of technology to raise agricultural productivity; strengthen gender equality in land, credit, and other agricultural policies; and achieve other measures to enhance nutritional outcomes for women and children. The program is open to non-government organizations (including universities) in the USA and other countries for grants ranging from US$50 thousand to US$1.5 million. Funding Opportunity APS-OAA-11-000003. The deadline for concept papers is 06 April 2012 (extended from a previous deadline in October 2011).

LinkOtto Kinne Foundation -- Awards in Ecology 2012. Each year, the Otto Kinne Foundation invites nominations from research ecologists worldwide for the Ecology Institute Prize (€6 thousand) and the IRPE Prize (€3 thousand). In 2012, the Foundation calls for nominations of ecologists distinguished for outstanding achievements in limnetic ecology. The deadline for nominations is 31 May 2012.
LinkU.S. Agency for International Development -- Forests and Land Use in Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. USAID -- in collaboration with other U.S. government agencies and the Moore Foundation -- funds sustainable forest management and land use in Ecuador, Colombia, and Peru through the program "AmaZONAS Andinas." The objective is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through forest monitoring, demonstration projects, and capacity strengthening. Grants are up to US$5 million. Applications are invited from U.S. institutions of higher education, nonprofit organizations, and regional NGOs in Latin America and the Caribbean. Funding Opportunity USAID-W-OAA-GRO-11-00603. The due date for the next round of applications is 31 May 2012.

Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA) -- Comparative Research Networks 2012. CODESRIA supports researchers in African universities and research centers through funding for Comparative Research Networks. The networks address priority research themes within CODESRIA's strategic plan, including (among others): (i) Water and Water Resources in the Political Economy of Development and Citizenship; (ii) Ecology, Climate, and Environmental Sustainability in Africa; (iii) the Changing Political Economy of African Natural Resources; and (iv) Agrarian Transformation. Most grants range from US$10 thousand to US$30 thousand. The application deadline is 15 June 2012.
LinkNational Fish and Wildlife Foundation (USA) -- Sea Turtle Conservation 2012. The USA's National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) makes grants for research and conservation of sea turtles in the Western Hemisphere. The program is open to persons, organizations, and agencies (excluding the U.S. Federal Government) working on projects to increase the populations of North Atlantic leatherbacks and loggerheads; Caribbean hawksbills; and East Pacific leatherbacks, hawksbills, and loggerheads. Most grants range from US$25 thousand to US$150 thousand for projects of up to three years. The NFWF requires a 1:1 match of resources. The deadline for pre-proposals is 01 June 2012.
LinkPro Natura Fund -- Grants 2012. The Fund makes grants in biodiversity conservation in Japan and developing countries. Most grants are about US$10 thousand, or the equivalent in yen. The application for international grants, i.e., from the developing countries, is 01 - 07 June. The Fund reminds applicants to check the guidelines each year to confirm the latest details (Note: using internet translation, if required).
LinkWorld Food Prize Foundation -- Norman Borlaug Award for Field Research and Application. The World Food Prize Foundation, with support from the Rockefeller Foundation, invites nominations for the first annual "Norman Borlaug Award for Field Research and Application." The award will go to an individual under age 40 who works directly in the field -- or at the production or processing level -- with farmers, animal herders, fishers, or others in rural communities. The award can be made to individuals in any discipline or enterprise across the chain of food production, processing, and distribution. The amount of the award is US$10 thousand. Nominations should be submitted before 30 June 2012.
LinkZoo Boise Conservation Fund -- Wildlife Grants 2012. Zoo Boise makes grants up to US$30 thousand for wildlife conservation in Idaho (USA) and internationally. Grants support habitat restoration, wildlife conservation and management, community-based conservation, and other goals consistent with Zoo Boise's master plan. Project proposals are accepted from conservation organizations around the world. The application period is 01 April 2012 through 30 June 2012.

Australian Center for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) -- John Allwright Fellowship 2012. ACIAR awards the John Allwright Fellowship for university post-graduate studies in Australia. Applicants are citizens of ACIAR's priority partner countries; under age 40 at the time of application; and usually employed by an ACIAR partner institution. ACIAR will consider supporting postgraduate research that includes fieldwork in the applicant’s home country, if essential for the project The deadline for applications is 31 July 2012.
LinkHawk Migration Association of North America -- Research Grant 2012. The HMANA makes grants up to US$1 thousand annually to support field studies of raptor migration ecology and behavior, population monitoring, and conservation. Interests include migration monitoring sites in Latin America. One proposal is funded each year. The deadline for proposals is 01 July 2012.
Link Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture (SEARCA) -- Applications 2013/2014. SEARCA offers academic grants for graduate studies and research in agriculture, natural resources, and related fields. Applicants are not over 35 years old in the following countries: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste, and Vietnam. Each country has an internal deadline for acting on SEARCA applications, and SEARCA requests complete submissions from the countries by 30 July 2012.
LinkWaterbird Society -- Nisbet Research Award 2012. The award is open globally to students, amateurs, and professionals for research and conservation of gulls and terns. Depending on the quality of proposals, the Society generally makes one or more awards each year of about US$1 thousand. Proposals are due 15 July of each year.
