German Education Ministry -- Climate Change and Developing Countries CLIENT 2010-2012

The German Education Ministry (BMBF) funds CLIENT -- “International Partnerships for Sustainable Technologies and Services for Climate Protection and the Environment." CLIENT makes grants for German research in collaboration with partners in Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, and Vietnam. Priorities in the CLIENT program are climate protection, resource efficiency, land management, and water management. In the first phase of applications, the German partner sends a detailed project outline to BMBF before 31 August 2010; 31 August 2011; and 31 August 2012. Link

Swiss Re -- ReSource Award 2013

The International ReSource Award for Sustainable Watershed Management is a prize for leadership in implementing sustainable watershed management in developing and emerging countries. The prize money is US$150 thousand allocated to one or more projects. Eligibility for the Award extends to NGOs, private organizations, scientific and public institutions, and similar bodies. The application deadline is 30 April 2012. Link

Kurita Water and Environment Foundation – Research Grants 2012

The KWEF makes grants in China and Southeast Asia for water research at universities, colleges, and research institutes. Research topics include technologies to conserve and restore rivers, lakes, and other water resources – among other themes. Grants are up to 500 thousand yen per project per year. Applicants are preferably under age 40. Each applicant should have a Japanese advisor in Japan or in the researcher’s home country. The application period is 01 April through 17 May 2012. Link

Stone Family Foundation -- Stone Prize for Innovation in Water

The Stone Family Foundation has launched a prize for innovative and entrepreneurial initiatives to get clean drinking water to people who need it in Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and Southeast Asia. The Foundation is looking for ideas that are proven in practice, and that are ready to be expanded. The Foundation will award up to five prizes, each of £100 thousand. The competition is open to individuals, NGOs, social enterprises, and other nonprofit organizations -- and to for-profit organizations that can demonstrate their social impact and need for the prize. The application deadline (for Round 1) is 22 March 2012. Link

French Development Agency (L'AFD) -- NGO Projects 2012

Through its program FISONG, the AFD will make grants for field projects in two themes in 2012: (i) Biodiversity and Development; and (ii) Water and Sanitation. The program favors projects in countries which are priority for French assistance in Sub-Saharan Africa. Both themes emphasize benefits for local populations. The program is open to French, international, and local NGOs -- preferably in partnerships -- for projects that average three years. The application deadline is 29 February 2012. Link

University of North Carolina -- Fellowships in "Smart Water" 2012-2013

The Global Research Institute, University of North Carolina, will support several fellowships for research related to the theme of world water scarcity. Invitations are open worldwide. Funding is a maximum of US$70 thousand for up to two semesters of residence at the university. The closing date for applications is 30 January 2012. Link

African Union -- Research Grants 2012

With funding from the European Commission, the African Union Commission invites proposals for research in post-harvest and agriculture; renewable and sustainable energy; and water and sanitation in Africa. Eligibility extends to most European, African, and other developing (ACP) countries -- and OECD/DAC countries for actions in the least-developed African countries. The AU favors proposals from consortia of scientists in at least three ACP countries, including two or more countries in Africa. Grants range from €500 thousand to €750 thousand, subject to co-financing requirements. The deadline for applications (English or French) is 20 April 2012. Link

King Baudouin Foundation -- Elisabeth and Amélie Fund for Water Management 2012

The Elisabeth and Amélie Fund makes grants in support of sustainable and equitable water management in countries of the Southern Hemisphere. Grants ranging from €5 thousand to €40 thousand will be made to organizations in Belgium that work with local partners. Applications (Dutch and French) are invited from 16 January 2012 through 03 April 2012. Link

Netherlands Organization for International Cooperation in Higher Education (NUFFIC) -- MENA Scholarships 2012

The Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs funds the MENA Scholarship Program to enable mid-career professionals in the MENA region to participate in short courses in the Netherlands. The courses must relate directly to the individual's professional specialization in fields that include water management; agriculture, forestry, and fisheries; and others. About 120 scholarships are awarded annually. Eligible countries are Algeria, Iraq, Lebanon, Morocco, Oman, Syria (currently suspended), and Tunisia. The closing dates are 01 March 2012, and 02 July 2012. Link

Fondation Ensemble -- Programs Fund 2012

The Programs Fund supports projects in water and sanitation and sustainable development, e.g., renewable energies, sustainable agriculture, alternative waste management, biodiversity, and others. The Fund makes grants for a minimum of €50 thousand per year for at least two years, up to a maximum of €250 thousand -- limited to 50% of total project costs. Eligible countries are Benin, Mozambique, Cambodia, Laos, Ecuador, and Peru. The deadline for applications (French or English) is 12 February 2012. Link
