The Energy Globe Award is for projects that conserve and protect natural resources, or that employ renewable energy. The winner in each category ("earth," "water," "fire," "air," and "youth") is awarded €10 thousand. Applicants can be individuals as well as organizations (i.e., private companies and corporations, development NGOs, community associations, government agencies, and others). Applications are accepted in English, German, French, and Spanish. The deadline for submissions is 15 June 2012. Link |

The Martha T. Muse Prize for Science and Policy in Antarctica is presented to an individual who has demonstrated potential for sustained and significant contributions that will enhance the understanding and/or preservation of Antarctica. The amount of the prize is US$100 thousand. The prize winner can be from any country, and work in any field of Antarctic science or policy. The last date for nominations is 12 April 2012. Link |

The IDB, in collaboration with several partners, sponsors the "Ideas Energy Innovation Contest" to increase energy efficiency and access to renewable energies in the Caribbean. The competition is open to business initiatives and commercial projects which may be at an early stage, but which have potential to achieve significant scale. Applications are invited from individuals, enterprises, and organizations in Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, and Trinidad and Tobago. Funding is up to US$200 thousand for each of the winning projects. The closing date for applications is 30 April 2012. Link |

The International ReSource Award for Sustainable Watershed Management is a prize for leadership in implementing sustainable watershed management in developing and emerging countries. The prize money is US$150 thousand allocated to one or more projects. Eligibility for the Award extends to NGOs, private organizations, scientific and public institutions, and similar bodies. This is a new annual prize in TWAS to recognize the work of social scientists who have been living and working in developing countries for at least ten years. The amount of the prize is US$15 thousand, provided by the government of Brazil. The application deadline is 29 February 2012. Link

The Stone Family Foundation has launched a prize for innovative and entrepreneurial initiatives to get clean drinking water to people who need it in Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and Southeast Asia. The Foundation is looking for ideas that are proven in practice, and that are ready to be expanded. The Foundation will award up to five prizes, each of £100 thousand. The competition is open to individuals, NGOs, social enterprises, and other nonprofit organizations -- and to for-profit organizations that can demonstrate their social impact and need for the prize. The World Food Prize Foundation, with support from the Rockefeller Foundation, invites nominations for the first annual "Norman Borlaug Award for Field Research and Application." The award will go to an individual under age 40 who works directly in the field -- or at the production or processing level -- with farmers, animal herders, fishers, or others in rural communities. The award can be made to individuals in any discipline or enterprise across the chain of food production, processing, and distribution. The amount of the award is US$10 thousand. The Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship fosters social entrepreneurs as a catalyst for innovation and progress. Categories include agriculture, animals, biodiversity, energy, environment, waste management, and water (among others). The Social Entrepreneur of the Year Competitions take place in different world regions. Each year, the Otto Kinne Foundation invites nominations from research ecologists worldwide for the Ecology Institute Prize (€6 thousand) and the IRPE Prize (€3 thousand). The UNCCD presents the "Land for Life" Award for inspiring efforts in land conservation and management. Eligibility is open to individuals and institutions that are making a significant and innovative contribution to reduce land degradation through land management, political leadership, policy, business, advocacy campaigns, or scientific research.
