The German Education Ministry (BMBF) funds CLIENT -- “International Partnerships for Sustainable Technologies and Services for Climate Protection and the Environment." CLIENT makes grants for German research in collaboration with partners in Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, and Vietnam. Priorities in the CLIENT program are climate protection, resource efficiency, land management, and water management. In the first phase of applications, the German partner sends a detailed project outline to BMBF before 31 August 2010; 31 August 2011; and 31 August 2012. Link

The IPGH makes project grants and training grants in support of its Agenda 2010-2020. Themes in sustainable development include climate change, land-use planning, and natural disasters in member countries of the Organization of American States. Proposals need to include institutions in at least two OAS countries. Project grants are a maximum of US$8 thousand. The deadline for proposals is 30 April 2012. Link
The CDKN is collaborating with the CARIBSAVE Partnership to fund research related to climate change in the Caribbean. The priorities are: (i) responding to climate change impacts, and (ii) policies and processes for development compatible with climate change. Grants range from US$45 thousand to US$90 thousand for periods of 12-18 months. Proposals must include at least one research organization from each country where the research is to be conducted, whether a project is national or regional. The ACCFP builds the capacity of African professionals, researchers, educators, and graduate students on themes of climate change adaptation in Africa. Applications are invited for the program's Teaching Fellowships. Recipients travel to suitable host institutions to work with established and qualified mentors to strengthen teaching on climate change. The Teaching Fellowships are a maximum of US$7,500 for periods of up to six months. Eligibility extends to university educators who are citizens of an African country, and based at an African institution. Applications are particularly encouraged from women and traditionally under-represented regions and countries of Africa. The deadline for applications (English or French) is 12 March 2012. Link
START makes grants to African scientists to conduct collaborative research and assessments of global environmental change in Africa. The priority is for understanding links between ecosystem services, agriculture, food security, and sustainable livelihoods. Proposals should be submitted by teams of three or more African scientists at the same or different institutions. Grants are up to US$45 thousand per team. The Martha T. Muse Prize for Science and Policy in Antarctica is presented to an individual who has demonstrated potential for sustained and significant contributions that will enhance the understanding and/or preservation of Antarctica. The amount of the prize is US$100 thousand. The prize winner can be from any country, and work in any field of Antarctic science or policy. The last date for nominations is 12 April 2012. Link
CIDA will co-finance Canadian organizations or coalitions to address climate change effects and adaptation needs that restrict or have negative impacts on food security and/or economic growth in Africa. The focus countries are Ethiopia, Ghana, Mali, Mozambique, Senegal, and Tanzania. Projects in certain other Sub-Saharan countries are also eligible (Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Dem Rep Congo, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa, and Zambia). CIDA will provide 85% of project funding; eligible applicants in Canada's private sector and/or civil society (or their coalitions) contribute the remaining 15%. The African Economic Research Consortium (AERC), in collaboration with the United Nations University's World Institute for Development Economics Research (UNU-WIDER), manage a collaborative program on issues of climate change. AERC and UNU-WIDER welcome proposals for research in the area of climate change and green development. Eligibility extends to researchers in the organizations and universities which comprise the AERC. The maximum grant is US$15 thousand. Proposals will be evaluated and funded on a rolling basis through 31 March 2012. Link
The UK's Center for Economic Policy Research, in partnership with the
UK's Department for International Development, have launched a 5-year
program in Private Enterprise Development for Low-Income Countries
(PEDL). PEDL aims to understand market forces and constraints in the
world's low-income countries, with attention to cross-cutting themes
that include climate and environment (among others). Eligibility
extends to researchers from academia, the non-profit sector, think
tanks, research centers, and similar. Exploratory Grants (multiple deadlines per year) range from £10 thousand to £35 thousand; the next deadline is 31 March 2012. Major Research Grants (annual) are a minimum of £100 thousand; the deadline is 16 April 2012. Link
USAID -- in collaboration with other U.S. government agencies and the Moore Foundation -- funds sustainable forest management and land use in Ecuador, Colombia, and Peru through the program "AmaZONAS Andinas." The objective is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through forest monitoring, demonstration projects, and capacity strengthening. Grants are up to US$5 million.
