The calendar of grant making is complicated by the different approaches that grant makers use to publicize the availability of grants, to invite and accept applications, and to review and finally select the winning applications.
The notes below explain whom we include and exclude from the Application Deadlines.
Included.--We concentrate on grant makers which review grant applications according to predictable annual cycles. They post calendar deadlines (i.e., closing dates) for receiving applications and supporting materials. This may be once a year, or more frequently. The first submission is usually a letter of inquiry or concept note in a few pages, but may even be a full proposal in some cases. For grant makers which have more than one review cycle in a year, we repeat the listing for each month in which it is relevant.
Included.--Some grant makers announce calls for letters of interest or proposals, but not according to predictable calendar dates that are repeated from one year to the next. Rather, they post calls at irregular intervals. We post the calls that are relevant, and that we are able to post on time to be useful to grant seekers.
Excluded.--The table does not include the many grant makers which accept applications continuously (i.e., on a "rolling" basis all year). The majority of grant-making programs in Terra Viva Grants are in this category.
Excluded.--A few grant makers do not accept or respond to unsolicted applications of any kind. Instead, they use an internal selection process managed by their staff, consultants, board members, etc. Terra Viva Grants offers profiles of these grant makers when they are sufficiently important in the "green sectors" not to be ignored. We believe that enterprising grant seekers often find indirect approaches (e.g., through partnerships) to access this funding.
Watch List.-- At any given moment, some grant makers are changing their application procedures, delaying or canceling deadlines, and in other ways signaling that change is taking place in how and when to apply for grants. We include these grant makers in our Watch List to be monitored. Also in the Watch List are grant makers which had announced deadlines in the previous year, but which have yet to post deadlines in the current year. Archives.-- The Archives are previous listings (by month) as an aid to understanding the calendar pattern of deadlines, especially the "missed opportunities" that may repeat in the following year.
The profiles of the grant makers (View Grant Makers) -- as well as the websites of the grant-making organizations -- should be consulted for specific information about funding priorities, eligibility criteria, and other key details. Grant makers frequently change their grant-making schedules. We post new and revised deadlines on a regular schedule, but we are certain to have wrong information in some cases. All information that we post in Application Deadlines has to be checked and verified through independent means.
