Academy of Sciences for the Developing World (TWAS) -- Grants for International Meetings 2012. TWAS makes grants to support the organization of high-level international and regional scientific activities in developing countries by offering financial assistance for conferences, workshops, symposia, and special meetings. Eligible fields include agricultural, biological, geological, and other sciences. Application deadlines are 01 June and 01 December of each year. Link

Academy of Sciences for the Developing World (TWAS) -- Prizes for Young African Scientists 2012. The AU-TWAS Young Scientist National Awards are prizes of US$5 thousand to young (not over age 40) African scientists in each of two categories: life and earth sciences; and basic sciences, technology, and innovation. Participating countries are Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Egypt, Ghana, Guinea, Lesotho, Malawi, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa, Sudan, and Zimbabwe. Nominations of women scientists are particularly encouraged. The closing date for nominations is 30 June each year. Link

Academy of Sciences for the Developing World (TWAS) -- Fellowships 2013. Each year, TWAS coordinates with participating research institutions in the developing world to host visiting research fellows. The fields of research include biotechnology, natural sciences, chemical and biological sciences, and others. Partner (host) organizations are located in Brazil, China, India, Iran, Kenya, Malaysia, Mexico, Pakistan, and Thailand.  For fellowships in 2013, application deadlines range from 28 June 2012 to 15 September 2012 -- depending on the program. AEON Environmental Foundation -- MIDORI Prize for Biodiversity 2012. The MIDORI Prize is a biennial international prize to honor individuals who have made outstanding contributions for the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity at global, regional, or local levels. The prize is co-organized with the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity, and supported by Japan's Ministry of Environment. The MIDORI Prize 2012 will be awarded to three individuals, each of whom will receive US$100 thousand and other gifts. The deadline for nominations (in English) is 30 June 2012. Link

African Enterprise Challenge Fund -- Support in Post-Conflict Countries. The AECF offers grants and loans to support businesses in Africa working in agriculture, financial services, renewable energy, and technologies for adapting to climate change. AECF's Post Conflict Window is seeking proposals from Dem Rep Congo, Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Somalia/Somalialand. The deadline for applications is 15 June 2012. Link

l’Agence inter-établissements de recherche pour le développement (AIRD) -- AIRD-CIRAD Doctoral Program. France's AIRD, in collaboration with CIRAD, will fund up to 15 doctoral degrees for agricultural researchers from developing countries. The support is for agriculture in the broad sense, i.e., including agriculture, environment, natural resources, etc. The research should be carried out in partnership with CIRAD. Applicants should be from inter-tropical and Mediterranean countries, and under 40 years of age. Applications (French, English) are due before 18 June 2012. Link

AXA Research Fund -- Post-Doctoral Research on Environmental Risks, 2nd Round 2012.  The AXA Research Fund supports research to help understand risk management and prevention, including risks related to natural disasters and climate change.  The Fund welcomes applications for post-doctoral fellowships from institutions in EU member states and collaborating countries in the FP7 research program (including a number of developing countries).  Grants are up to €120 thousand for two years.  In the second round of applications 2012, institutions need to express their interest before 21 June 2012.  Link

African Bird Club -- Small Grants 2012. The ABC Conservation Awards (up to £1,500) support small and medium-sized bird conservation projects in Africa. Applicants should be resident in Africa. The ABC Expedition Awards (up to £2,000) take place within continental Africa or adjacent islands, with a strong base in conservation and birds. Applications for both programs are due before the end of February, June, and October. Link

Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC) -- Research Exchanges, Canada with Latin America and Caribbean. In collaboration with Canada's IDRC, the AUCC manages the Canada-Latin America and Caribbean Research Exchange Grants (LACREG) to strengthen international partnerships and consolidate emerging networks among academic researchers from Canada and Latin America and the Caribbean. Projects should address one or more of IDRC’s program areas: agriculture and the environment; global health policy; science and innovation; and social and economic policy. The countries eligible for grants through LACREG are listed in the announcement. Grants are up to CAN$15 thousand, and require a cost share. The application deadline is 29 June 2012. Link

Australia Government -- Australia Endeavor Awards 2013.  The Endeavor Awards provide opportunities for citizens of the Asia- Pacific region, Middle East, Europe, and the Americas to undertake study, research, and professional development in Australia.  The program also supports outgoing Australians.  The categories of awards vary by purpose, funding levels, duration (short and long-term), and country eligibility.  The application period closes 30 June 2012.  Link1  Link2

BBC World Challenge -- Global Competition. World Challenge is jointly organized by BBC World News Limited and Newsweek to identify projects and small businesses from around the world that feature exceptional enterprise and innovation at a grassroots level. The categories include sustainable farming, energy, water, and environment (among others). In 2011, the closing date for nominations was 19 June (monitor for changes 2012). Link

BBVA Foundation -- Awards in Frontiers of Knowledge 2012. The BBVA Foundation annually makes awards to recognize innovative and fundamental advances in several areas of science, culture, and collaboration. The eight thematic areas include ecology and conservation biology; climate change; and development cooperation (among others). BBVA will award €400 thousand plus a diploma and a commemorative artwork in each prize category. The awards are open to individuals and organizations of any nationality. The deadline for nominations (in English) is 30 June 2012. Link

Both ENDS -- JWH Initiative to Promote Leadership of Young Environmentalists. The Joke Waller-Hunter Initiative offers grants to advance the leadership and learning of junior persons working for -- or affiliated with -- environmental civil society organizations in developing and emerging countries. JWH especially encourages the nomination of young women and local community leaders. Grants can be applied for a wide range of activities, but candidates should have a clear idea of how they intend to use the grant. The grants range from €2,500 to €10,000 each, and 15 grants are offered twice a year. The nomination deadlines are 01 June and 01 December. Link

Brazilian Government -- Science Without Borders "Young Talent Program."  Science Without Borders is a joint effort of Brazil's Ministry of Education (MEC) and Ministry of Science and Technology (MCT). The program aims to qualify 100 thousand Brazilian students and researchers in top universities worldwide through 2014. The program also makes grants to attract talented young researchers from outside the country to Brazil. Grants in the "Young Talent" program are for one to three years in the priority areas of Science Without Borders -- including sustainable agriculture, renewable energy, disaster prevention, biodiversity and bio-prospection, marine sciences, and others. The application deadline for Young Talent is 16 June 2012. Link

CGIAR Research on Wheat -- Competitive Grants 2012. The Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) offers competitive grants in support of its revised long-term strategy for wheat research. The strategy has ten strategic initiatives. Grants are US$50 thousand to US$300 thousand per year for projects of one to three years. The deadline for concept notes is 08 June 2012. Link

CILSS -- Regional Program on Land Management and Adaptation to Climate Change in Sahelian Countries. CILSS (Le Comité Permanent Inter Etats de lutte contre la Sécheresse dans le Sahelis) is the regional organization to fight drought in the Sahel region of Africa. In collaboration with the French GEF, CILSS will fund 12 projects to help community organizations combat the degradation of natural resources and recuperate their lands in the face of climate change. Eligible countries are Benin, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Guinea, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Senegal, and Togo. Projects can be proposed by partnerships of local communities in the eligible countries with civil society organizations in the "North." Funding will range from €70 to €120 thousand per project. The call for projects is published in French, English, and Portuguese. The closing date for applications is 12 June 2012. Link

Collaborative Partnership on Forests -- Wangari Maathai Award 2012. The Collaborative Partnership on Forests has launched the Wangari Maathai Award to honor the impact of this extraordinary woman who championed forest issues around the world. The award in the amount of US$20 thousand will be given to an individual for outstanding contributions to preserve, restore, and sustainably manage forests and to communicate the role that forests play in rural livelihoods and the environment.  Nominations related to grassroots initiatives are particularly welcome.  The closing date for nominations (English, French, Spanish) is 15 June 2012. Conservation International -- Indigenous and Traditional Peoples Conservation Fellowship. Conservation International, in partnership with the Secretariat for the Convention on Biological Diversity, offers fellowships that combine research and professional development for leaders and scholars of indigenous and traditional peoples. The fellowships focus on climate change in relation to the ecosystems and biodiversity that affect their lands, communities, and livelihoods. In 2011, the closing date was 30 June (monitor for changes 2012). Link

Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA) -- Comparative Research Networks 2012. CODESRIA supports researchers in African universities and research centers through funding for Comparative Research Networks. The networks address priority research themes within CODESRIA's strategic plan, including (among others): (i) Water and Water Resources in the Political Economy of Development and Citizenship; (ii) Ecology, Climate, and Environmental Sustainability in Africa; (iii) the Changing Political Economy of African Natural Resources;  and (iv) Agrarian Transformation. Most grants range from US$10 thousand to US$30 thousand.  The application deadline is 15 June 2012. Link

Crawford Fund -- Australian Support for Asia-Pacific Research in Agriculture, Fisheries, Forestry. The Crawford Fund Fellowship supports a scientist in agriculture, fisheries, or forestry from the Asia-Pacific countries for additional training in Australia. The Fellowship is offered annually to an agricultural scientist below the age of 35 years who is a citizen of (or who is working in) one the following countries: Bangladesh, Bhutan, Burma, Cambodia, East Timor, Fiji, Indonesia, Laos, Nepal, Niue, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu and Kirabati, Vanuatu, and Vietnam.  The closing date for applications is 29 June 2012. CRDF Global -- Grants for Environmental Technologies in Azerbaijan. CRDF Global, in partnership with Azercell Telecom and the Barama Innovation Center, is sponsoring a business plan competition in Azerbaijan to encourage new technology-based businesses in ICT and green (environmental) technologies. The program is open to students, researchers, and technology entrepreneurs who are legal residents of Azerbaijan. With funding from the U.S. Department of State, CRDF will make four grants ranging from US$10 thousand to US$20 thousand for the best submissions. The application deadline is 24 June 2012. Link

Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund (CEPF) -- Biodiversity Conservation in Haiti. CEPF will fund conservation projects in the Massif de la Hotte, Haiti. This is a key biodiversity area in the framework of CEPF's Caribbean Islands Biodiversity Hotspot. Applications are invited from NGOs, community groups, private enterprises, universities, and other civil society organizations. CEPF will fund small projects (average of US$13 thousand) and large projects (average of US$110 thousand in the Caribbean region). The deadline for Letters of Inquiry (English or French) is 29 June 2012. Link

Energy Globe Award for Sustainability -- Competition 2012. The Energy Globe Award is for projects that conserve and protect natural resources, or that employ renewable energy. The winner in each category ("earth," "water," "fire," "air," and "youth") is awarded €10 thousand. Applicants can be individuals as well as organizations (i.e., private companies and corporations, development NGOs, community associations, government agencies, and others). Applications are accepted in English, German, French, and Spanish. The deadline for submissions is 15 June 2012. Link


ETH Zurich -- Research Fellow Partnership Program.  ETH offers doctoral and post-doctoral research fellowships in agriculture, forestry, and natural resources related to development. Fellows in RFPP are Swiss residents under age 36, and citizens of developing and transition countries through age 40. Projects have to be embedded in research partnerships between a CGIAR center (or equivalent) and ETH Zurich. The next application deadline is 30 June 2012. Link

European Commission (EC) -- Biodiversity Research in Tropical and Subtropical Europe (BEST-2012).  Net-Biome is a consortium of partners from EU member states to fund research for the sustainable management of biodiversity in the outermost regions and territories of Europe.  Net-Biome requests proposals for BEST 2012 -- the voluntary scheme for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services in Territories of the EU Outermost Regions and Overseas Countries and Territories.  Eligibility extends to organizations in EU member states; EU overseas countries and territories; and international organizations.  Partners from third countries are also eligible. The closing date for applications is 01 June 2012.  Link


European Commission (EC) -- Climate Change in Southern Mediterranean Countries. Through the European Neighborhood Policy Instrument (ENPI), the EC will collaborate with partner countries in ENPI-South with climate change mitigation and adaptation, mainly through capacity development and information sharing. ENPI-South includes Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Palestinian Territories, Syria, and Tunisia. Participation is open to all legal persons (individually and in consortia) in EU member states, and in countries and territories covered and/or authorized by ENPI. The application deadline is 18 June 2012.  Link

European Commission (EC) -- Water and Health in Somalia. The EC will fund projects to improve infrastructure and institutional capacity to provide water in urban and peri-urban areas of Somaliland and Puntland, and to upgrade key departments of the Hargeisa Group Hospital. Grants will be made in three lots, two of which correspond to water supply in Somaliland and Puntland, respectively. Eligibility for grants extends to nonprofit organizations in Europe, ACP countries, OECD/DAC countries, least-developed countries (except Somalia), and international organizations. European Commission (EC) -- Water Management in the Mediterranean. The EC supports demonstration projects in Sustainable Water Integrated Management in the Mediterranean (SWIM). Focus areas are water governance; water and climate change; water financing; water demand management and efficiency; municipal waste; municipal wastewater; and industrial emissions. The EU collaborates with ENPI-South countries of Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestinian Authority, Syria, and Tunisia. In 2011, the closing date for proposals was14 June (monitor for changes 2012). Link

European Union -- Central European Initiative (CEI), Cooperation Activities 2012. The CEI makes grants of up to €20 thousand to support its action plan. Cooperation projects are mainly for seminars, workshops, training courses, and other kinds of meetings. Priority themes include climate, environment, and sustainable energy; and sustainable agriculture. Projects can be submitted by all public and private bodies in CEI's member states, as well as by international and regional organizations. Preference is for proposals submitted from CEI's non-EU member states (Albania, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Serbia, and Ukraine). European Union -- Central European Initiative (CEI), Know-How Exchange 2012. The CEI's Know-How Exchange Program (KEP) connects knowledge providers in some EU countries with recipient partners in Albania, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Serbia, and Ukraine. Applicants are organizations in the CEI which are also members of the EU. Priority themes in the exchange program include agriculture, energy, and environment (among others). Grants are up to €40 thousand.  The application deadline is 30 June 2012. Link

French Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs -- Biodiversity and Natural Products in Asia. The French government announces its third call in the program Bio-Asie to foster French-Asian collaboration in research and development of natural products that may have applications in medicine, cosmetics, agriculture, renewable energy, etc. Each funded project should include at least one French team combined with partners in two or more eligible Asian countries: Brunei, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Laos, Japan, Malaysia, Myanmar, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam. Grants will range from €23 thousand to €40 thousand for projects of two years. The application deadline is 25 June 2012. Link

French Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs -- ENVI-Med Regional Program. The program MISTRALS (Mediterranean Integrated STudies at Regional And Local Scales) supports research on Mediterranean ecosystems in the face of climate change and other natural and human pressures. The ENVI-Med Regional Program -- funded by the French government -- calls for proposals from French researchers in collaboration with international partners, including partners in southern and eastern Mediterranean countries. Thematic priorities include the Mediterranean climate and hydrological cycle; environment and sustainable development; water and sanitation; sustainable governance of Mediterranean development; and protection of landscapes and cultural heritage. Grants are up to €40 thousand for two years. The deadline for applications (French or English) is 12 June 2012. Link

French Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs -- Research Cooperation France-Indonesia 2013.   The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in partnership with the French Ministry of Higher Education and Research, announce "Nusantara 2013" to promote research cooperation between France and Indonesia.  Focus areas include environmental protection, marine science, prevention of natural disasters, renewable energy, and several others.  Contact information (in each of France and Indonesia) is provided in the announcement.  The deadline for proposals is 15 June 2012.  Link

French National Research Agency (ANR) -- Adaptation to Environmental Changes in the Mediterranean Sea.  France's ANR will fund planning to bring together potential research partners to address environmental issues of the Mediterranean Sea in relation to fisheries, ecosystem risks, impacts of marine transport, and others.  The ANR prefers a consortium approach and North-South inclusion.  A planning grant (ARP) can range from €50 thousand to €200 thousand for 18 months.  The deadline for proposals is 29 June 2012.  Link

Fresno Chaffee Zoo -- Wildlife Conservation Fund 2012. The Fresno Chaffee Zoo Wildlife Conservation Fund makes grants for wildlife conservation and research that focuses on rare, threatened, and endangered animals and their habitats. The priority is for in situ conservation projects. Awards are in any amount, and most grants range from US$1 thousand to US$2 thousand. The principal investigator must be associated with a recognized institution. The application deadline is 01 June 2012. Link

Future Agricultures Consortium (FAC) -- Young People and Agri-Food, Small Grants 2012-2013. The FAC announces a program of small grants to support its theme on Young People and Agri-Food.  Grants of up to UK£2 thousand are intended for “value-added” activities such as additional field visits; additional data analyses; specific writing projects; attendance at conferences; or organizing conference panels. The FAC expects to award most grants to African researchers, but it also encourages others to apply. Short proposals are due by 15 June 2012. Link

Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation -- Marine Microbiology Initiative. The Foundation's MMI is initiating a new portfolio that will support 10–15 of the world’s most innovative scientists in marine microbiology. The focus of the research is defined in the Foundation's call for applications. Applications are invited from candidates at varying career stages, and from a variety of scientific backgrounds. The awards will run for five years (2013-2018) with funding of US$200 thousand to US$500 thousand per year. The application deadline is 04 June 2012. Link

Government of India and UNDP -- India Biodiversity Awards. India's Ministry of Environment and Forests, jointly with the United Nations Development Program, call for nominations for the India Biodiversity Awards in four categories. The awards will be presented during the COP of the Convention on Biological Diversity in Hyderabad, October 2012. Nominees must be institutions based in India, and engaged for at least five years in biodiversity management. Each award recipient will be honored with INR 100 thousand plus a citation. The deadline for nominations is 10 June 2012. Link

Higher Education for Development (HED) -- Conservation in the Andean Amazon. HED, in cooperation with the U.S. Agency for International Development, calls for applications for the second phase of the "Initiative for Conservation in the Andean Amazon" (ICAA II) in Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. HED anticipates making one award per country for initiatives in higher education that promote the conservation of Andean-Amazon biodiversity. Each award is up to US$750 thousand over three years. The program is open to U.S. colleges and universities that apply individually or in partnership with other institutions. Partnerships are encouraged. The closing date for applications is 28 June 2012. Link

Higher Education for Development (HED) -- Women's Leadership Programs in Paraguay and Rwanda, Focus on Agriculture.   The Women’s Leadership Program, funded through the U.S. government, supports national and local development goals that promote gender equality and female empowerment. Subject to the availability of funds, HED anticipates issuing five Requests for Applications (RFAs) for higher education partnerships with Armenia, Paraguay, Rwanda, and South Sudan. Current requests for applications include: (i) A partnership in Paraguay to produce well-prepared women that have leadership skills in the agricultural sector; and (ii) A partnership in Rwanda to increase women’s access to advanced degrees in agricultural sciences, and to promote women’s empowerment in agriculture. Grants are to U.S. institutions of higher education in partnership with pre-selected universities in Paraguay and Rwanda, respectively. Humane Earth Foundation -- Environment, Biodiversity, and Sustainable Agriculture in Europe. The Foundation calls for project proposals in environment, biodiversity, and sustainable agriculture.  Priority is for grants to small organizations in Western Europe, but also including some grant making in the Balkan countries and Eastern Europe. The next deadline is 04 June 2012. Link

International Initiative for Impact Evaluation (3ie) -- Open Window 4.
  The programs of 3ie provide systematic reviews of the social and economic impacts of development interventions in low and middle-income countries.  The Open Window accepts proposals in any sector -- including agriculture and rural development, energy, environment and disaster management, and others. There is no maximum size for individual grants. In Open Window 4, 3ie will make 6 to 10 awards for a total expenditure of up to US$4 million. The closing date for expressions of interest is 24 June 2012. Link

Inter-University Council for East Africa -- Lake Victoria Research.
The Inter-University Council for Africa funds research projects that contribute towards poverty reduction in the Lake Victoria Basin. The theme for Phase 3 is Climate Change and Food Security, with two sub-themes: (i) aquaculture and fisheries, and (ii) natural resources management. In 2011, the closing date was 30 June (monitor for changes 2012). Link

IUCN - Thomson Reuters Media Award 2012. Established by the Thomson Reuters Foundation and IUCN, the award aims to encourage high standards in environmental reporting worldwide. The award is open to journalists and writers across the world who write for any publication, website, or blog. The winner of the 2012 award will be funded to attend the IUCN's World Conservation Congress in South Korea. The application deadline is 15 June 2012. Link

Japan International Research Center for Agricultural Sciences -- International Awards for Young Agricultural Researchers 2012. 
JIRCAS makes awards of US$5 thousand each for up to three young agricultural researchers in developing countries who contribute to outstanding research and development in agriculture, forestry, fisheries and related themes. Candidates need to be less than age 40.  The deadline for applications is 29 June 2012.  Link

MacArthur Foundation -- Application Deadlines for New Strategy of Conservation and Development 2012.
The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation has published the application dates for its revised grant-making program in conservation and development.  For year 2012; the deadlines for letters of inquiry are: (i) 03 February for the Lower Mekong Basin; (ii) 20 April for the Great Lakes Region (Africa); and (iii) 15 June for the Southern Andes.  An additional deadline will be determined later for Marine Conservation in the Caribbean, Madagascar, and Melanesia. National Birds of Prey Trust -- Grant Applications 2012
. The National Birds of Prey Trust (UK) makes grants to conserve birds of prey in their range countries. Grants support conservation education and science. Each project is expected to help build capacity in bird conservation with local communities, NGOs, and governments. Small grants are under £5 thousand, and larger grants are available. Grants funded by the Trust may form part of larger projects. The annual submission deadline is June. Link

National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (USA) -- Sea Turtle Conservation 2012.
The USA's National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) makes grants for research and conservation of sea turtles in the Western Hemisphere. The program is open to persons, organizations, and agencies (excluding the U.S. Federal Government) working on projects to increase the populations of North Atlantic leatherbacks and loggerheads; Caribbean hawksbills; and East Pacific leatherbacks, hawksbills, and loggerheads. Most grants range from US$25 thousand to US$150 thousand for projects of up to three years. The NFWF requires a 1:1 match of resources. The deadline for pre-proposals is 01 June 2012. Link

New Zealand Aid Program -- Scholarships 2013. New Zealand's government provides a variety of opportunities for training and university study through the New Zealand Aid Program, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. Eligible countries/regions include many in the Pacific; East and Southeast Asia; Sub-Saharan Africa; and Latin America. The priorities for support often include agriculture, renewable energy, fisheries, disaster risk management, and other areas related to natural resources and environment. Application deadlines are specific to each country/regional program. Many deadlines are in April, May, and June 2012. Link

Panos South Asia -- South Asia Climate Change Award for Journalists. In collaboration with the Climate and Development Knowledge Network (CDKN) and the International Center for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), Panos will provide training fellowships to journalists in South Asia on climate-related issues. Applications are invited from print, television, radio, and web journalists who report on climate change and environment from Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. The closing date for applications is 15 June 2012. Link

Ramsar Small Grants Fund. The Ramsar Small Grants support projects in wetlands conservation and wise use in developing countries. Projects can be proposed by individuals, government agencies, and NGOs. In 2011, the deadline for applications was 30 June (monitor for changes 2012). Link

Roger Williams Park Zoo -- Sophie Danforth Conservation Biology Fund 2012. The Sophie Danforth Conservation Biology Fund makes grants of up to US$1 thousand to protect threatened wildlife and habitats worldwide. Priority is for projects that demonstrate a multi-disciplinary approach to ecosystem conservation, and that involve in-country collaborators. Applicants can be of any nationality. Royal Geographical Society -- Field Projects 2012. The RGS makes fieldwork grants for 40-50 teams of researchers and students. Most projects are in developing countries. Save Our Species -- Second SOS Call for Proposals
. SOS announces its second call for Threatened Species Grants. Priority is for projects that focus on critically endangered and endangered species in the following groups: threatened tropical terrestrial Asian vertebrates; threatened small marine mammals; threatened cycads; and threatened freshwater African animals. Grants will be made to civil society organizations for field projects. International NGOs are eligible if they work closely with national stakeholders, local communities, and with the required authorizations from governments. The average grant size is expected to be about US$100 thousand. The deadline for proposals is 22 June 2012. Link

Social Science Research Council -- African Peace Building Network, Research Grants.
The Social Science Research Council (SSRC) makes research grants to African researchers, policy analysts, and practitioners working on conflict and peace building in Africa. Support is available for research and analysis on issues that include environmental change and conflict -- among other themes.  Applicants must be African citizens currently residing in a country of Sub-Saharan Africa. Other eligibility criteria are explained in the grants announcement. SSRC will make up to fifteen grants, each up to a maximum of US$15 thousand. The deadline for applications is 15 June 2012. Link

Society for Marine Mammology -- Research Grants 2012
. The Society for Marine Mammology makes grants to help support marine mammal research in emerging and developing countries. Grants are for up to US$1,500 for field research by early career researchers. Applicants do not need to be a current member of the Society to apply. Toyota Motor Corporation -- Toyota Environmental Activities Grants Program 2012
. Toyota makes grants to support environmental activities implemented by nonprofit organizations on environmental themes that vary from year to year.  The current themes are "Biodiversity Conservation" and "Global Warming Countermeasures."  Grants are made in Japan and overseas (i.e., internationally).  The international program is open to applicants in Japan, and international partners in collaboration with Japanese groups.  The deadline for applications is 18 June 2012. University of California Davis -- Norman E. Borlaug LEAP Grants. The Norman E. Borlaug Leadership Enhancement in Agriculture Program (Borlaug LEAP) offers university fellowships funded by the U.S. government, and managed by U. California at Davis. The LEAP program currently calls for applications from students in Sub-Saharan Africa who are conducting research on topics related to USAID's global hunger and food security initiative ("Feed the Future"). Proposals are coordinated between the applicant's home university, a university in the USA, and a center of the CGIAR. Applications need to be submitted by 12 June 2012. Link

UK Department for International Development (DFID) -- Global Poverty Action Fund, 4th Innovation Round.  DFID invites concept notes from UK-based nonprofit organizations in its fourth round of applications for the Innovation Window, Global Poverty Action Fund. Grants in the Innovation Window fund projects of high to medium risk in support of the Millennium Development Goals (which include agriculture and environment, among others).  Grants are up to £250 thousand for projects of up to three years in the world's least-developed countries (list is provided).  Concept notes are due by 25 June 2012.  Link

U.S. Agency for International Development -- Development Innovation Ventures 2012-2013. USAID sponsors Development Innovation Ventures (DIV) to identify, develop, test, and scale innovative approaches in development. DIV's portfolio includes projects across the range of USAID's program areas -- including in agriculture, energy, greenhouse gas reductions, waste management, and many others related to natural resources and environment. Applications are invited from a full spectrum of organizations in the USA and other countries that include NGOs, private businesses, faith-based organizations, institutions of higher education, foundations, civic groups, regional organizations, and international organizations. For DIV in 2012-2013, the deadlines for letters of interest (LOIs) are 01 June 2012; 01 September 2012; 01 December 2012; and 01 March 2013. Link

U.S. Agency for International Development -- Livelihoods and Management of Arid Lands in Kenya. USAID-Kenya will fund one or more organizations for a program in Kenya, “Resilience and Economic Growth in the Arid Lands -- Improving Resilience" (REGAL-IR). The 5-year program is funded at US$49 million to address diversification of livelihood opportunities; community management of natural resources; improving market access; disaster risk reduction; and improving nutritional outcomes. U.S. Agency for International Development -- Supporting Forests and Biodiversity in Cambodia. U.S. Department of State -- Fulbright NEXUS for the Western Hemisphere 2012-2013. The Fulbright Regional Network for Applied Research (NEXUS) Program supports scholars from the USA and other countries of the Western Hemisphere to engage in collaborative thinking, analysis, problem-solving, and multi-disciplinary research. Topics include one in Sustainable Energy. Each of about 20 NEXUS Scholars will receive a grant of US$30 thousand. U.S. Department of State -- International Dialogue on Dams and Water Infrastructure. The Bureau of Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs (OES) at the U.S. State Department will coordinate a global dialogue on multi-purpose infrastructure and surrounding natural infrastructure at the nexus of water, food, and energy for the developing countries. The OES will fund one or a consortium of nonprofit and non-governmental organizations, or international organizations, to establish and implement the "Nexus Dialogue on Dams and Water Infrastructure Optimization."  Funding is up to US$297 thousand for up to two years. U.S. Department of State -- Market Access for Smallholder Agriculture in the Americas. The Bureau of Oceans and International and Scientific Affairs (OES) at the U.S. State Department invites applications for a project to help small agricultural producers improve their market access for goods they produce using sustainable agricultural practices. U.S. Embassy in Costa Rica -- Clean Energy in Central America and the Caribbean. As part of the Energy and Climate Partnership of the Americas (ECPA), the U.S. government announces a regional competition to promote projects in clean energy for Central America and the Caribbean. The competition is coordinated by the U.S. Embassy in San José, Costa Rica. Grants will range from US$100 thousand to US$250 thousand for projects of up to two years. The program is open to academic and research institutions, and to nonprofit organizations, that can influence the public and private sectors to pursue clean energy. U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service -- Migratory Birds and Wetlands in Mexico 2012. The USFWS supports public-private partnerships to implement projects in Mexico that further the goals of the North American Wetlands Conservation Act. These are projects for wetlands and associated habitats to benefit migratory birds. Applications are open to nonprofit organizations and associations; government units (at all levels); businesses and corporations; universities and other educational institutions; and international organizations. Wales Africa Community Links -- Forestry Projects in Africa. In collaboration with the Waterloo Foundation, Wales Africa Community Links supports partnerships between Wales and Africa for projects in forest conservation and tree planting. Woodland Park Zoo -- Jaguar Conservation Fund. The Woodland Park Zoo (Seattle, USA) makes annual grants for projects in jaguar conservation. Projects incorporate conservation, education, research, and connections to communities living with jaguars. Most grants are US$2 thousand to US$5 thousand. World Agroforestry Center -- Ann Stroud Memorial Scholarship for Agroforestry Research in East Africa. The World Agroforestry Center (ICRAF) offers a scholarship to postgraduate students in East Africa to conduct thesis research in collaboration with ICRAF. Applicants should be nationals of East Africa who are 35 years of age or less, and involved in agroforestry research, education, or development. The scholarship is tenable at any university in East Africa. The upper limit of support is US$5 thousand. Applications are due at ICRAF before 30 June 2012. Link

World Bank -- Strategic Impact Evaluation Fund. The Strategic Impact Evaluation Fund (SIEF) is a new trust fund at the World Bank to evaluate the impacts of development programs on alleviating poverty and improving livelihoods. Its first call for proposals identifies four thematic areas, including a theme on water supply, sanitation, and hygiene. SIEF will consider proposals from all development programs -- such as from NGOs, bilateral aid agencies, etc., -- in partnerships with fiduciary sponsors at the World Bank. Applicants submit a proposal template and budget template in the first stage of application. The World Bank will make grants of US$25 thousand to selected applicants to develop full proposals. The closing date for submitting the first-stage templates is 04 June 2012. Link

World Food Prize Foundation -- Norman Borlaug Award for Field Research and Application.   The World Food Prize Foundation, with support from the Rockefeller Foundation, invites nominations for the first annual "Norman Borlaug Award for Field Research and Application."   The award will go to an individual under age 40 who works directly in the field -- or at the production or processing level -- with farmers, animal herders, fishers, or others in rural communities.  The award can be made to individuals in any discipline or enterprise across the chain of food production, processing, and distribution.  The amount of the award is US$10 thousand.  Nominations should be submitted before 30 June 2012.   Link

Zoo Boise Conservation Fund -- Wildlife Grants 2012. Zoo Boise makes grants up to US$30 thousand for wildlife conservation in Idaho (USA) and internationally. Grants support habitat restoration, wildlife conservation and management, community-based conservation, and other goals consistent with Zoo Boise's master plan.
