African Bird Club -- Grants in 2011. The ABC makes Conservation Awards and Expedition Awards for conservation projects in Africa. The grants can be used for survey and research of African birds, educational projects, training courses, informational guides, and other ideas. Individuals and organizations can apply for grants of up to £2 thousand. Applicants must be normally resident in Africa, and satisfy other criteria. Applications are due at the end of February, June, and October. Link L'Agence Inter-établissement de Recherche pour le Développement (AIRD): French-Brazilian Collaboration for the Guyana Region. The program GUYAMAZ launches its first call for proposals for projects in research, education, and development for the Guyana region of the Amazon Basin. This refers to French Guiana (Guyane) and the Brazilian states of Amazonas, Amapá, and Maranhão. Themes for the collaboration are Amazonian biodiversity, agro-ecology, biotechnology, remote sensing, and others. The International Ashden Awards are cash prizes of £20 thousand to £40 thousand to support projects in sustainable energy in Africa, Asia (including China), and Latin America and the Caribbean. Themes for 2012 include micro finance and carbon finance for energy projects; new energy products for low-income customers; renewable electricity; renewable fuels; and energy-related actions that reduce deforestation. Link Asian Waterbirds Conservation Fund – Grants 2011 The Fund supports the conservation of migratory waterbirds and their wetland habitats, as well as projects which bring socio-economic benefits to local communities. Maximum grant size is US$4 thousand. The Fund issues a single call for applications each year, with a deadline of 31 October. Link Asia Social Innovation Award -- Solutions for Asian Environment 2011. The Asia Social Innovation Award seeks to foster an innovation culture in Asia, with a focus on urban challenges. The themes for the 2011 competition are aging population, environment, and poverty. Issues in environment include how to address pollution (air, water, noise, light); how to balance between development and conservation; and how to address emissions that contribute to climate change. The competition will select three winners from Hong Kong, and three winners from residents of other cities in eligible Asian countries. Each winner will receive HK$2 thousand. The Challenge is an annual prize of US$100 thousand to invite ideas to radically advance human well-being and ecosystem health. The deadline for submissions is 24 October 2011. Link Climate and Development Knowledge Network -- CDKN Innovation Fund. The CDKN invites applications for its Innovation Fund in themes that include climate-compatible development strategies and plans; improved access to climate finance in developing countries; and management of climate-related disaster risks. Grants in Stage 1 (up to £100 thousand) fund technical assistance, knowledge management, and research. Grants in Stage 2 (up to £200 thousand) fund policy-relevant research. The Foundation's "Engage in Conservation" Project will accept 12 fellows to learn from Dr. Jane Goodall and other experts on how to take action for biodiversity conservation. Each participant will lead a conservation initiative in her/his home country following group work in Hamburg, Germany. Applicants are youth and young adults ages 18-28 worldwide. The closing date is 16 October 2011. Link EC Competitiveness and Innovation (CIP) Program -- Eco-Innovation 2011. CIP Eco-innovation supports projects connected with eco-innovative products, techniques, services, or processes. Priority areas include materials recycling; sustainable building products; the food and drink sector; water; and green businesses. Eligible countries are the EU member states plus selected other countries (including Albania, Croatia, Israel, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, and Turkey). The call is open to all legal organizations, with emphasis on small and medium enterprises. The closing date is 08 October 2011. Link EC Research Cooperation -- FP7 ENERGY 2012. The European Commission invites research proposals in the theme of Energy. Topics of relevance for developing countries include biofuels and biomass, solar energy, and carbon sequestration (among others). Specific collaboration opportunities are identified with China for solar dish technology, and with the countries of the Southern Mediterranean in other solar applications. The Equator Initiative calls for nominations for the Equator Prize 2012 to recognize 25 outstanding local initiatives that are advancing solutions for sustainable development. Link German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) -- Research Partnerships on African Agriculture. The BMBF invites applications from German and African partners to propose interdisciplinary research projects on food security and agricultural production in African countries. Proposals should take a systems approach to agricultural production; soil and water management; minimization of losses in agricultural value chains; and the roles of gender and location in addressing food security. Other topics can be included. German-African partnerships can comprise universities, non-university research institutions, and commercial companies. LinkHumane Earth Foundation -- Sustainable Development in Europe. The Foundation calls for project proposals in environment, biodiversity, and sustainable agriculture. Link International Foundation for Science -- Re-Opens for Applications. The IFS has re-opened for applications, following a period of programmatic review. IFS makes grants of up to US$12 thousand for research projects of 1-3 years in the sustainable management of biological resources (e.g., agriculture, soil science, forestry,
biodiversity, environmental chemistry, natural products, food science, animal
husbandry, veterinary medicine, aquaculture, and marine resources). Applications are invited from citizens of developing countries who are less than age 40 (with some exceptions, by world regions); at the beginning of their research careers; and who have at least a university master's degree. International Iguana Foundation makes an annual call for proposals for iguana
conservation. Priority is for projects related to survival of endangered

Sweden's Sida supports a training program in sustainable coastal development open to applicants from Africa (Kenya, Liberia, Mozambique, Tanzania, and Uganda) and Asia (Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, Indonesia, and Vietnam). ESPA will fund Evidence and Impacts Research Grants (EIRGs) to generate evidence on how ecosystem services contribute to poverty reduction around the world. Link UK Economic and Social Research Council -- International Partnerships and Networks 2011. The ESRC invites applications for the first round of its International Partnership and Networking Scheme. The aim is to foster long-term relationships of social scientists in the UK with international colleagues.
